Jean-Claude Muller, president of the "Genealogical and Heraldical Society of Luxembourg", has recently published a series of articles on surnames derived from river names. You may reach him at the following e-mail address:

In one of the articles it is said that the name Syre - and similarly Sūre/Sauer or Sarre/Saar - is based on the ancient root "sar-" or "srav-" with the meaning "to flow".
