Dear Carol,
If you do get to St. Paul, make sure that you contact the University beforehand so they will know to expect you. The are not open on the weekend if I remember correctly. If possible, I would plan more than a day unless your husband will help you look at the films.
You can order the films through the Mormon Church but the film numbers from the U. of St. Thomas website might be different from the LDS numbers.
I would really try to look at Gothic lettering before attempting to read the records. Many of the records are printed with fill-in-the blank type format but others are handwritten and somewhat difficult to read until you get into where you find the names.
