Aymee's explanation is very good. Two small tips:

Examples of translated records are sprinkled throughout this forum and the rootsweb.com message board for Luxembourg. For instance, <http://www.genforum.genealogy.com/luxembourg/messages/2072.html> has a translation of a death record, posted by Jean Ensch on March 16, 2001.

Also, if a passage is difficult to read, lay the photocopy aside and try again another day. Having fresh eyes really does make a difference. The first record is a bear, but be persistent. You'll improve with practice.
