James Luttrell & Celia Catlett
I think the claim that the James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was the son of John and Winifred (Lawrence)Luttrell is odd. Here is why.
The literature suggested that James, son of John and Winifred, was born in 1763. There was no documentation for this date. The same date, 1763, had been suggested in the literature as the birth date for James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett. This was found to be false. The 1850 federal census for District 16, Frederick County, Virginia, listed James 'Lutrell' as 61 yrs. of age. This suggested a birth date of about 1789. His wife was listed as "Selah" which was an obvious aberration of the given name, Celia.
Then, the 1860 federal census for District 5, Frederick County, Virginia, listed James Luttrell, age 71 yrs., farmer, born in VA, wife Cecelia, age 73 (born abt.1887).
These two census reports confirmed that the James Luttrell therein was NOT born in 1763. The question was why he has often been suggested as a son of John and Winifred Luttrell? Winifred was supposedly born about 1733. She would have been about 56-7 years of age when this James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was born. This seemed a "stretch" although a small possibility. Was it not more likely that the James Luttrell in these two census reports, was a grandson of Winifred Luttrell? And, if so, who might the parents of James Luttrell, born about 1789/90 have been?
In the 1870 federal census for Locust Grove, Floyd County, Virginia, there was a James 'Littrell' in the household of Samuel M. Helen and Samuel's wife, Mary. James was 80 years of age and an invalid. No Celia or Cecilia Luttrell was found in the 1870 census. She probably had died by then. This James appeared by age to have been one and the same James Luttrell as listed, above, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.James who married Celia Catlett must have died between the times of the 1870 and 1880 federal census enumerations as his name was not in the 1880 census.
