Francis Melvin Luttrell, who married Margaret Jarvis, is one of eight children listed on p.20 of "Luttrell Ancestors of Tennessee", by Rev. Terril D. Littrell, whose parents were Hugh Fulton Luttrell and Eliza J. Bounds.Hugh was one of 11 children of William and Elizabeth C. Witt Luttrell, as stated on pages 5 and 20.Page 4 states that William, b. 1770, was the son of Richard and Sarah Churchwell Luttrell, and that Richard was a soldier in the Revolution from Richmond County, Va., who was living there in 1783 (William probably born there).William married Elizabeth in 1787.Some information in "Littrell" appears wrong."littrell" states that Elizabeth was the daughter of Jesse Witt b. 1762, son of John Witt b. 1750 in Albemarle Co., Va.(These dates don't "compute").However, in "Tennessee Cousins", p. 220, by Worth S. Ray, Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc., Elizabeth who married William, and Jesse, are both children of John Witt and Elizabeth Luttrell the sister of Richard. This would make Elizabeth Witt the first cousin of her husband William Luttrell."Tennessee Cousins" on p. 220 incorrectly connects Richard back through his father John to Simon Luttrell. On p. 223, it is admitted that this is speculation.Page 222 states that William died in 1813."Littrell" states that William and Elizabeth moved to Knox County, TN in 1795 with their two young sons John and Richard (the rest of the children were born in Tennessee).William and family settled at the Fork of the French Broad in Holston and developed a plantation about 6 miles from Knoxville. In "Luttrell Ancestors in Virginia", by Rev. Littrell, on p. 6, Richard Luttrell married Sarah Churchwell in 1754.He was born abt. 1735 in Westmoreland County, Va., son of "Old John" and Frances Katherine Sanford. She was born abt. 1732, dau. of James and Elizabeth Churchwell of Amherst County. This page states that their son William was b. 1765 (slight difference from the 1770 date in Littrell's "Tennessee").On p. 5, "Littrell" gives "Old John" as also known as John, Jr., the son of John and Ruth Luttrell. He was born July 16, 1717, at St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland Co., Va.He married Frances Katherine Sanford abt. 1734 (2nd wife). She was b. 1720 dau. of Thomas Sanford, Jr. and wife Margret, and died after August of 1752.John Luttrell the father of "Old John", was b. November 10, 1691 at St. Stephen's Parish, son of James "the immigrant" and Susanna. He married Ruth_____ first and had 3 children, recorded at St. Stephen's, including John Jr, ("Old John").Ruth died and he married again in 1721.
