Hi Susan,
My grandfather's brother who moved to Middlesbrough was called Thomas RUTLEY, he was born in Sunderland.
The eariest member of my family that I can trace was a
William LUTTLEY who joined the Somerset Fencible Cavalry somewhere on the Somerset/Devon border in 1792. He travelled with the regiment to Scarborough, where they garrisoned the castle. William married Mary Hick, a local girl, by special licence there in 1798, and they had at least two children in Scarborough. After his demob from the army, the family travelled north to Sunderland in the early 1800s, and settled here.
My family have all decended from William and Mary, although as mentioned previously, the name has changed over the years.
Regards
John.
