1.JOHN5 LUSK(ROBERT4, JOHN3, NATHAN2, JOHN1) was born July 16, 1776 in Augusta Co., VA, and died February 24, 1861 in Slagle, Polk Co., MO1.He married JEAN BOYD August 27, 1801 in Carter Co., TN, daughter of WILLIAM BOYD and REBECCA PORTER.She was born 1783 in Augusta Co., VA, and died 1835 in McMinn Co., TN.
Notes for JOHN LUSK:
"In the late 1700's, came one John Lusk to the Tennessee Valley and secured a large body of land and established some large plantations as he was a large slave owner, having more than 80 working slaves.He built flat boats and floated his produce to market in New Orleans.He also was a breeder of race horses and other fine stock; and he was very wealthy.In 1849, he sold his lands and slaves and came with his sons except Robert to South Missouri." James B. Lusk, son of John Lusk, was appointed as the Administrator for his father's estate on 16 March 1861.His duties of paying the debts and dividing the estate according to law and customs had some dangers as reported by him in a statement sworn before the County Clerk on 7 August 1866.
"---about the month of June or July 1862, he had recieved Forty-seven dollars - money belonging to the said estate of John Lusk, Dec'd.Which said money was taken from him the said administrator by a band of robbers who came to his house and demanded all the money he had, he being overpowered, was compelled to surrender to said robbers all the money he had on hand among which was the aforesaid Fortyseven dollars.Signed James B. Lusk"(From Probate Records Box 40, Polk Co., MO)
John Lusk's estate at the time of his death included six head of horses, sixteen head of cattle, thirtythree head of sheep and seventeen stock hogs.He had one wagon which was sold for $21.00.There appears not to have been a large amount of household effects.There were 2 beds, a cookstove, a loom, a spinning wheel, a square table and a number of chairs, a clock and a box of books.318 pounds of bacon were sold as well as 11 bushels of wheat, 20 bushels of oats and 25 bushels of corn.Besides the material items, John Lusk had notes of indebtness valued at $2038.00 which were due him.Property listed as belonging to John Lusk was - the east half of the Northeast quarter of Section 29; the west half for the northwest quarter of Section 28; the southwest quarter of Section 28 except 30 acres of the south end of the east half this said last mentioned quarter all in the Township 32 and Range 22.(From Probate records Box 40, Polk Co., MO)
