A Matter of Chastity
The High Plains Saga of a Woman’s Revenge
By
Douglas Yocom

On a hot morning in July 1894, on the high plains of western Kansas, Ellen Lunney and her family arrived at a small one-room school. They came to attend a hearing for Gene McEnroe, charged with raping Ellen, 19, a young school teacher. Neighbors and the curious jammed the crowded schoolroom. Ellen, wearing a cape despite the July heat, walked up behind young Gene McEnroe and stunned he crowd by pulling a six-shooter from beneath her cape. She fired five times.
Ellen Lunney’s sensational murder trial unfolded two months later in Norton County, Kansas. Norton’s newspapers reported the news of two teams of lawyers and their dramatic courtroom clash. The county attorney argued no one had the right to shoot her accuser and claim self defense. Ellen’s attorneys contended Ellen’s chastity, her cherished virtue, had been stolen from her, and she felt a six-gun was her only recourse. “I wish he had killed me,” she said.
A Matter of Chastity is the riveting nonfiction story of what life was like for homesteaders and settlers who first arrived on the western range and the challenges they faced. The book tells of the first two decades of pioneer life in small-town Norton, Lenora and New Almelo, Kansas,
“A Matter of Chastity is a facinating page of early Kansas history. . . It is a story the reader will not forget.” – David Dary, author of True Tales of Old-Time Kansas.
