I am descended from the Donkin family of Rothbury, Northumberland (UK). In 1675 Robert Donkin married Sarah Lumsden in Morpeth. They had a son called Stephen and Sarah died sometime before 1690. Sarah was the widow of William Lumsden and had at least three Lumsden children - Dorothy born 1665 in Hemsworth, Yorkshire, Andrew born 1667, and Ann born 1669, both in Morpeth. In 1693 these three Lumsden children sued Robert Donkin over their mother's estate. Sir William Middleton spoke for the young Lumsdens and it appears that there was a family connection there. Dorothy daughter of Sir Ralph Middleton married Walter Lumsden of Newminster Abbey Grange round about 1630. If anyone knows anything about this family I'd be most grateful to learn the facts. Were Walter Lumsden and Dorothy Middleton related and if so how? Incidentally Robert Donkin married again and had s son called Aynsley who became a lawyer and acted for the Middleton family on many occasions so they can't have burnt too many bridges burned over Sarah Lumsden's estate!
