LUCE, Aaron & Sally Mariah Grandy - Woodmansee, Johnson, Hastings, et al
Posted by: Jack Sheldon, Jr. (ID *****5395) Date: August 07, 2010 at 13:52:08
  of 1343

AARON LUCE was b. 22 Mar 1798 in Oneida, New York, and d. 23 Nov 1877 in Spencer, Medina County, Ohio. He married Sally Mariah / Maria Grandy and they were in Spencer by the 1850 US Federal Census. They had 8 children of record including Hannah (1827 - 1902), Lydia (1830 - ), Addison (1834 - ), Adaline (1836 - 1900), Edward (1838 - 1918), Polly M. (0510 - 1891) Elizabeth "Jane" (1845 - 1920), and John Henry (1847 - 1922). It is my goal here to try to do some justice to their inter-related spounses and family in what is a very interesting set of circumstances to our Sheldon family history... as well as that of our Johnson heritage and Crowner ancestors.

HANNAH LUCE married John B. White (1817 - 1880) of Lorain County, Ohio, and their daughter Mary Elizabeth (1850 - 1926) married Sylvester Johnson (1844 - 1912). Sylvester and Mary are interred in the LaGrange Twp. Cemetery, Lorain County, which is also shared by his parents, Nathaniel Johnson and Rhoda Crowner. They just happen to be my ggg-grandparents, through their son and Sylvester's brother, Stephen Burr Johnson who moved to Michigan sometime around 1860 with his wife, Emelia Crandall.

LYDIA LUCE - Area of research.

ADDISON LUCE - Area of research.

ADALINE LUCE married Sylvester Johnson's brother George Johnson (1836 - 1904), and they are also at rest in the LaGrange Twp. Cemetery. They had children Flora, Hiram, Ray, Mertz, and Lucy. Again, George is a son of Nathaniel and Rhoda (Crowner) Johnson.

EDWARD LUCE - Area of research, but he did marry Mary A. Burk.

POLLY LUCE married Joel Egbert Hastings (1836 - 1920) on 17 Dec 1863, son of States Hastings and Caroline Crowner, sister of Rhoda Crowner, above. They had children Freddie, Roemaine, Caroline, Ida, and Sidney. However, Polly died 17 Apr 1891, and Egbert then married one of her sisters...

... enter ELIZABETH JANE LUCE, or "Jane" as she is so many times so named in research notations. She has been one of the most interesting subjects of my work in genealogy and learning about the history of our family. My ggg-grandparents Benjamin (1791 - 1870) and Lovisa (Rice) (1796 - 1870) had 7 children, the first passing in infancy. Their second child Sylphina Mariah Sheldon married Bradley B. Woodmansee, and moved with the Sheldon family in 1848 to Lorain County. Elizabeth married one of their three children, Benjamin Thomas Woodmansee on 26 Jun 1864, and he was the only sibling of the three who had further descentants.

Jane and Benjamin gave birth to Lillian, Lula, Charles, Frank, Kittie Belle, Jennie, Pearl Edith, Earl Bradley, Lona H, and Arthur Leroy. While it is likely that some of these children passed in infancy (i.e. Lula 1867 - 1875, Charles 1869 - 1875, and Frank 1870 - 1875), one in particular becomes further interesting, Lillian Myria Woodmansee (1865 - 1941).

Lillian first marries Bird Johnson (1859 - 1887), son of Elijah Johnson [brother of Sylvester, George, and Stephen, mentioned above] and Lydia Haynes, and grandson of, you have it(!) Nathaniel Johnson and Rhoda Crowner. Bird Johnson tragically dies in an explosion while fighting a fire on 29 Nov 1887 in LaGrange just before their daughter Luella Birdie Johnson is born the following spring, (Luella married Alfred John Moehle). [Note, cemetery transcription notes date of death was the 29th while the newspaper article provides that on the 28th he died instantly]. Lillian then married Arthur Bassett in about 1891.

Sometime in the later 1800's Benjamin T. and Jane (Luce) Woodmansee move to Gratiot County, Michigan, where Benjamin dies from 'consumption' in 1893, and my son and I traced his death record and cemetery transcription to North Star Cemetery where we located his headstone in 2006. After his death, Jane returns to Lorain County and marries her deceased sister's (Polly) husband, Joel Egbert Hastings. The three share a headstone near the north-side drive in LaGrange Twp. Cemetery.

While there are other stories that may seem just as interesting with families so close-knit, there is one further story to tell. While my gg-grandfather David F. Sheldon (6th child of Benjamin & Lovisa noted above) married Adaline Crandall (sister of Emelia Crandall who married Stephen Burr Johnson, also mentioned above), they move to Michigan sometime in the mid-1850's.

Their son Frank Milford Sheldon married his first cousin Addie Vera Johnson in Eaton County, and had Edith and Vernon Burr Sheldon, my grandfather; their mothers being Crandall sisters, daughters of Kidder Crandall and Polly Stevens.

Thanks for your interest!

Best regards.
