Hi Erin,
Contact Clonmel local enterprise, or a book shop. Here you can buy a local history of Clonmel, just published for the millennium.
The name originates in Ireland in the area arounf Ballylooby, but closer to the Knockmealdown mountains. There is an old disused graveyard, ballybacon with headstones (William Looby 1750 approx and Denis Looby 1820 approx (died age 27). There was much emigration to America from 1820 right up until 1920's. We have family who did emigrate. Could you put dates on your fathers/grandfathers arrival in Kansas. Obviously it will be easier to match up the families if you can do that. I can get more info and leads to when I next talk to my relatives in Ireland
Denis Looby (gaelic version Lubaigh (meaning 'cunning brown warrier')
The connection is interesting. Good luck with your further searches.
Denis
