Loya / Loyola is the Spanish form of the Basque LOIOLA, a habitation name from a place in the province of Guiluzcia, so called from the Basque.
A notable member of the name was Ignatius LOYOLA (1491-1556) the Spanish soldier and founder of the Jesuits. He was born at his ancestral castle of LOYOLA in the Basque province of Guipuzcoa. A page in the court of 'Ferdinand the Catholic' he then became a soldier. In the defence of Pampeluna, he was severely wounded in the leg, and as his convalescence was slow, and he turned to the works on the lives of Jesus Christ and his saints. In Paris in 1534 he founded (with St. Francis Xavier and four others) the Jesuits, members of the Society of Jesus. It is strictly organized and governed by a 'General' responsible only to the Pope.
