Hi Cynthia!
I am glad to hear you found my posting interesting! I don't believe the surname Loya is originally Basque, there are Loya in several European countries and often times they all assume the surname originates in their country of origin, be it the Basque country in Spain, France, Norway or Hungary. What we have in our surname and the fascinating and unique distribution among several countries is a reflection of the dispersion the Loya family group experienced, having originated in Tuscany, Italy.Loya, as I have shared before in this forum, belongs to the Etruscan substratum of the Tuscan dialect of Italy, and the Etruscan and Basque languages, both not related to any other Indo European language and both island languages, one extinct, Etruscan, and one living, Basque, have been linked by scholars, in other words, scholars believe that although both Etruscan and Basque are not related to any other Indo European languages, they are related to each other. What I have found extremely interesting and which I discuss in my book is that in the surname Loya there is a definite link between the Etruscan and Basque languages, confirming the thoeries linking these two languages. But Loya is originally Tuscan, or Etruscan, and not Basque, although it is related to Basque. One reason we know this is because Loya, originally spelled Loia both in Tuscany and in Navarre, is a femenine gender word, the femenine of Loy or Loi, and Basque does not have gender distinctions. In Italy, in Tuscany and the Tuscanized provinces of Sardinia and Liguria, you find both Loy and Loya, in femenine and masculine versions, but in Basque, although you find Loy, it would not be found in its femenine gender version of Loya, it would be and it is an outside introduction into the Basque country. It certainly has been established a long time in Navarre, ever since all of Navarre was French, but Navarre was only one of several destinations the Loya from Tuscany were scattered to. And, certainly, all of us who come from the Loya of Navarre, whether French or Spanish Navarre, would certainly have Basque blood.
