Hi Mike,
I have been digging on my Doner family for years and was recently referred to the Loya site by Heidi Agin.
My Aunt Viola Wolcott also married a Loya.
My g grandmother was Mary Doner/Frenyear born 1814 Canada her father is listed as Joseph Doner. She married Louis Freeman in Swanton, VT 1831 Louis 's family is Abenaki.
We have tracked a brother of Mary's from Vermont through New York to Iowa where he died. He was Joseph Doner born 1807 Canada. The story from his children was his father was a fur trader and mother was full blooded Indian. Through the Freeman side of my family they left Swanton and went to Chazy, Ny and to Monkton VT
So I started looking for Doner's in Chazy area and found Thomas Doner. and family through the census.
I also found in 1900 in Orwell, VT
a Constant Doner born 1806 Canada birth month and year unknown age 84 a day laborer living with his daughter
Belle Oaches age 56 born NY birth month and year unknown. her husband was Joseph Oaches age uknown. they had 2 children/ 0 living at the 1900 census.
Is this the Belle Oakes you talk about.
Is Constant possibly Thomas Doner?????
Let me know what you think if they are Abenaki line I am thinking that my Mary is related to these folks somehow.
My sister and I are working with the Abenaki's establishing the Freeman/ Doner line. We have their 3 sons on the Abenaki Warrior list. They served in the Civil War.Out of Monkton, VT descriptions are Black Hair, Black Eyes, dark complexion.
