Eleanor, Martin Van Buren Loy's grandfather Jacob Loy was first cousin to my ancestor John Henry Loy, both grandsons of Martin Loy who came to America in 1741. I don't know where you would have gotten the information that Martin V.B. was born in Springfield County, Ohio. His birth was 18 May 1840 in Harrison Twp., Preble County, OH. His father Job lived in Harrison Twp., Preble County, OH since age 3 months (Job was born in 1805 Campbell County, TN) and the family was in the Preble County census until Job and Job's father Jacob moved their families to Page County, IA in 1853. (Note: In TWIN Twp., Preble County, there is another Loy family with a completely different immigrant ancestor.) For many years, I had supposed Martin died by the 1900 census, since Janet was listed as a widow in the census. However, I've found many women were listed as "widow" when their husbands were in jail, or if they were separated/divorced, or in hospitals with mental illness, such as was the case with Martin. I found Martin's 1905 obituary at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~npmelton/calnew05e.htm which clearly gives his birth in Preble County, OH, too. I have copies of photos of Martin's father and brother William, and I was sure I had one of Martin but hadn't scanned it yet for my Loy site. I'll have to look through my hard copies and see if I have it. I don't know if you are familiar with Loy Chamberlain, who was an architect in the S.F. area. His grandfather William E. Loy was Martin V.B.'s younger brother. Around the time I published my genealogy book on the Loy family, I was corresponding with Loy's daughter. Loy earned his degrees at U.C. Berkeley...but to console you, I'm a Cal State student here in San Diego. ;-) Loy's family inherited Job's family Bible, which gives the birth dates of Job's descendants. Job ordered the Bible from the American Bible Society, and paid the grand sum of 56 and 1/4 cents for it. (Don't ask me how he came up with that 1/4 penny.) The third child of Martin V.B. and Janet was Janet A. Loy, who was age 3 in the 1880 census. She died before the 1900 census, as Martin's wife Janet was listed as having 3 children, 2 living that year. Thanks to your hint, I just found Robina in the 1920 census. I hadn't had her married name, so this is news to me. The 1920 census shows her married to Henry C. Allen. That year they had three children: Dorothy, Donovan, and Sue. I'll start tracing them now and see what I come up with. Hope this helps. Notify Administrator about this message?
