Barbara Catherine Glenn was born about 1824 to Abraham Lowman and Elizabeth Brubeck, Augusta Co., VA. Married to George Glenn. See prior post. Her sister Peggy's married name and birth date are unknown to me at this time.

Greenville, VA
September 24, 1862

Dear Sister:

I received your letter in due time after date. I was indeed happy to hear from you, but felt sorry to think you were so much disturbed by the Yankees, especially at the time when there was so much sickness in your family and even the death of your favorite little boy. I sympathize with you all, but am sad indeed to inform you of my own bereavement and circumstances. George was wounded in the battle of Port Republic on the 9th of June. He was brought home about a week after the fight. He survived only two weeks and then died on thee 28th, leaving me, the children and Evaline [George's unmarried sister] alone. Owing to my circumstances after his death, I was compelled to make a sale which took place on yesterday the 23rd. I sold everything but the land and some of the things that were necessary for our comfort. My property sold very well.

Mr. Pilson, the executor of the estate, thinks that I will have enough money to meet all the debts I owe and some left for the children. I want you to come up just as soon as you can to stay with me, but if you can possibly write before you come do so for I would like to know the prices of cotton yarn and cotton cloth before I purchase. Let me know what conveyance you will have and how much you can bring. If it is cheap, I would like to have eight to ten bunches of yarn of numbers 8, 10, and 12 besides some cotton cloth. Also let me know if you can advance the money for me for it is dangerous to send it my mail. If you cannot do so probably you could get it from Mr. Bent who shall be paid as soon as you arrive here.

I have not received a letter from our friends in Mercer nor from brother John since I wrote you, but I heard that Samuel, Eliza, and father had to leave their homes on account of the Yankees. [The following Lowmans appear in Mercer, VA on the 1860 census: Abraham Lowman, age 74, John Lowman, age 35, Jacob Lowman, age 49, Frances Lowman, age 49 and Abraham Lowman, age 21 ]. They have had the privilege of moving back, I believe. I do not know whether their property was injured or not, nor have I heard from Sam's boys since last winter. We can write again to Sam and Liza as the way is open and supposed safe for the mail to pass. Hope we will hear from you soon.

Well, Peggy, as I hope to see you soon I will not lengthen my letter by any other news save we are all well at this time. When you come, then I will tell you all. Do come without fail, but please write to me first that I may know what I may do about buying the cotton.

Give love to all and write soon,

From your affectionate sister,
Barbara [Lowman] Glenn
