It is believed that the spellings: Tolliver, Toliver, are phonetic variations of Taliaferro (pronounced Tolliver). Supposedly, there was only one surviving immigrant, Robert Taliaferro, from whom we all descend. It is believed that the variations were used as a result of enumerators' spelling phonetically listing names on census as well as other public records. There have been cases documented where Tol(l)iver was used as a given name, quite often signifying ties to a former related family of the wives.
