Edward Needham Lovitt or Edward C. Lovit
Several questions?
Which is correct? Edward Needham Lovitt or Edward C. Lovit
I know the headstone says Edward C. Lovit. Where did the "Needham" come from.It seems more likely that that "Needham" was really Edom, the son of Edward C. Lovit and Nancy Ann.
Second question -- has anyone ever uncovered infromation on
the following Lovitt's from the DOBBS COUNTY 1780 TAX LIST: (present day Greene and Lenoir Co., NC)
*LOVITT, JOHN 334 lbs.
*LOVITT, DAVID 122 lbs.
*LOVITT, MORRIS 400 lbs.
Third question.I'm trying to find information on Samuel Arthur Lovette the son of Martin Emilous Lovett (16 Oct 1836 - 25 March 1895)- son of Edom Lovitt - Grandson of Edward Lovitt
Samuel Arthur Lovette was married Mamie Jane Shanklin and is my great-grandfather.
For those of you just starting out, I have posted the information that I have found concerning the Lovitts of North Carolina and Kentucky.I hope no one has a problem with me passing this information along. The information is compiled from various internet web pages and the following:

From: “Our Caddell Ancestor's Stories” The Edward C. Lovit Family by Clifton E. Caddell
The surname of this family has been spelled several different ways in the records. The U.S. Census that listed Edward's family in Dobbs County of the Newbern District of north Carolina in 1790 spelled the name: Edward Lovit. But the census taker who recorded it in Knox County, Kentucky, in 1810, spelled it: Lovitt. However, his gravestone inscription, at the Wolf Creek Cemetery, clearly spells his name: Edward C. Lovit. So the correct spelling of the surname is unsettled. We have no knowledge of the ancestry earlier than Edward in the Lovit branch of the Caddell family. So the information available to us begins with Edward C. and his wife Nancy Ann Lovit. The precise year of the arrival of the Lovit family at their home in wolf Creek is unknown, but they were settled in Kentucky in time to be listed as residents of Knox County in the 1810 census.Edward Lovit was a frontiersman where the frontier of the white man's version of civilization was approaching the headwaters of the Tennessee River Valley in Western North Carolina. He was a longhunter and trapper trespassing in Indian territory, in the late 1700's in and around the Little Tennessee River Valley.A family tradition has been passed down through the generations claiming that Edward rescued Celia and her younger sister, Permelia Jemimia, from the ruins of an Indian village after having participated in a battle with the Indians,Edward Lovit, almost without doubt, the husband by Indian custom, and the father of the girls, had had a bigamous Indian marriage to a young Cherokee woman who lived in the village in the Little Tennessee River Valley, unknown to his Caucasian wife, nancy Ann, who lived in the white settlement beyond Indian Territory. The Holston Treaty in 1791, came into effect in March 1802, expelling all white trespassers, by force from the area. Edward determined to take his two young daughters to raise them among his own people rather than to grow up as half-breeds among the tribe. He presented them to Nancy Ann with the story that has been passed down through the Caddell generations to explain the presence of Cherokee ancestry in a more acceptable light. The Lovit Family, with Celia and Permelia firmly attached, traversed their way from North Carolina to Long Island in the Holston River, then over the Wilderness Road, along the Cumberland River and Clear Fork to Wolf Creek. They settled around 1805; it is clear that Edward was listed in the Knox County tax record in 1808 and the U.S. Census Knox County of 1810.
From the "Journal of North Carolina Genealogy" by William Perry Johnson, Editor, Summer 1966, Vol. XII, No. 46, pp 1663 and 1670
Some say the Lovitts arrived in America, possibly by way of Canada, and settled in Nova Scotia. This remains to be discovered. The original spelling and pronunciation of LoVette is French--the first syllable "LO" pronounced with a long O, the last five letters in the second syllable pronounced "vay" long A.
All too often for it to be coincidental, correspondents have stated, "We have been told by family members our Lovett line originated in France". Further confirmation of French ancestry is the olive complexion, black hair, and dark eyes. There are strong indications of connections with the Cherokee Indians, as will be related, that would account for the dark features but certainly not the name. The question has been raised whether EDWARD LOVITT'S wife was Indian, also Cherokee. This was not an unusual situation as many Frenchmen migrating from Canada into America during the Colonial days did marry Indian women.
Thus far the earliest record found shows an EDWARD LOVIT had settled, by 1780, in Dobbs County, North Carolina and remained there until after 1790. Dobbs County was formed in 1758 from Johnston. By 1791, Dobbs County was abolished, having been divided into four other counties: Wayne--1779, Jones--1788, Lenoir and Glasgow--1791. Glasgow's name changed to Greene County in 1799.

Researchers have been unsuccessful in locating this family in an 1800 census or tax list or proof indicating who were Edward's wife, #2-son, #3-son, and #4-daughter. One source has stated Edward had a daughter named MARIE.
From 1790 to 1804, Edward's whereabouts are unknown, but believed him to be the same man found in Knox County, KY tax records of 1805 and 1806. Also, on March 26, 1808, EDWARD LOVETT paid taxes on land; on July 10, 1808 EDMUND LOVET paid taxes on land; on July 10, 1808, *NATHANIEL LOVET paid tax on one horse. *This is the only early record of a Nathaniel Lovet who would be at least 21 years old and fits the age category of either son.A careful study of records indicates the possibility of EDWARD LOVITT having married at least twice. If so, the older children by a previous marriage did not relocate (at least for any length of time) in Kentucky.

The 1810 Knox County Census show the Lovitts living next door to the WILSON OLIVER family whose wife is ANNA CHARITY, daughter of Edward Lovitt. From Knox County in 1818, Whitley County is created where Edward pays taxes beginning in the year 1819 on "Wolf Creek" water course, living there until his death in 1845. He is listed in 1830 and 1840 Whitley County census with his wife and son, Jonathon who remained in the household with both his parents until their deaths.
In Union College Library at Barbourville, KY is an unpublished manuscript by Elmer Mercer which includes a list of Knox County Revolutionary Veterans from Virginia, North Carolina, and other states. Among those named, EDWARD LOVITT. Mr. Mercer did not give sources; just stated most of them from Eastern Virginia, the Eastern Carolinas, and Maryland. All were over 45 years of age in 1810.
A descendant of Edward Lovitt has stated, "I was told by my grandfather, that Edward Lovitt served in the Revolutinary War under General Francis Marion. General Marion, also known as "Old Swampfox", took his troops through the swamps of South Carolina, where numerous battles and surprise attacks were fought. They marched from South Carolina into North Carolina. If Edward Lovitt's Revolutionary War Records could be located, there would possibly be valuable information to further aid the search.

Footnotes:
Celia LOVITT:Although neither Edward nor Nancy Ann had Indian blood, it is from the Lovit Ancestry that the, now much diluted, Indian blood has it origin. Their adopted daughter, Celia was the ancestress who introduced the Cherokee Indian blood into the Caddell line.Although she is said to be the adopted daughter of Edward and Nancy Ann, a closer look at the historical background suggest that she was, almost certainly, Edward's natural daughter. Celia was half Cherokee. She was from the Tomahitan Band of the Cherokee Tribe of North Carolina and Tennessee. She became the wife of Daniel Caddell Sr. They had nine children: eight sons and one daughter. Among them were Joel Caddell and Daniel Boone Caddell.A Caddell family tradition has been passed down through the generation claiming the Edward rescued Celia and her younger sister, Permelia Jemimia, from the ruins of an Indian village. Celia was four years old and Permelia only a year old, when Edward arrived at his home outside of Indian Territory and presented his wife, Nancy Ann with the two little girls and the story of the battle.Whether Nancy Ann believed the story is unknown, but she did accept the little girls into her home.It can be shown by genetic consideration, that Celia was not full blood Indian. It is also significant that all her children knew they were one-quarter Cherokee, which indicates a parent is one-half Indian.Celia was born in 1797 in an Indian village in what remained of Cherokee Territory in North Carolina after the Holston Treaty of 1791, but before the final reductions by subsequent treaties. It was March 30, 1802 when the United States Government decree became effective from a law Congress had passed that expelled all white trespassers, by force from the area.Edward Lovitt, almost without a doubt had a bigamous marriage with and Cherokee woman as was the custom of the frontiersmen in the area. When Edward was forcibly expelled, he determined to take his two daughters with him, so that they would not be raised as half- breeds. He presented the two girls to his wife, Nancy Ann with the story of the rescue. The family then removed themselves from the area with Celia and Permelia firmly attached, making their way westward toward Kentucky.By 1850, Celia is clearly the head of the house and is found in Whitley County at the time of the census. She is found is house # 401 as follows:
