Many years ago, I was studying in the Melbourne library and happened across a book called The Origin of English Surnames. This contained the only info I have seen and suggested old French = young wolf (a thought that appealed at the time). This seems entirely consistent with earlier Roman origin. You must be very keen.
Apparently, my grandfather Arthur Stanley was one of several brothers who scattered through the Empire. The only lot I know about at all went to East London, near Durban. I suspect one may have come to Australia decades before we did (1951).I hope procrastion doesn't steal any time from you. Not today anyway.
