Loveland in the News Early 1900's

In visiting the Chronicling Anerica site of the Library of Congress, there are selections of newspapers published mainly in the early 1900's and when one searches for any "Loveland" citations there are many that contain interesting family and/or news worthy information. I've presented some of those in earlier messages. Many may not warrant a single-message presentation but will be of special interest to any researcher who makes a connection with his ancestors. One may use the search engine for this forum to enter a first name, other surname or location and see what turns up. Here are some selections:

California:
From the San Francisco (CA) Call:

"Mrs. H. A. LOVELAND, wife of the late Hon. H. A. LOVELAND of Saginaw, Mich., has recently purchased a home on Le Conte avenue, near Euclid, Berkeley."--6 OCT 1901, p. 27.

"Will J. LOVELAND, who was arrested on a warrant charging him with practicing medicine without a certificate, pleaded guilty . . . and was sentenced to pay a fine . . ."--14 DEC 1902, p. 59.

Policeman John LOVELAND came to the aid of Katie MORAN in Berkeley after midnight this morning. She screamed to escape "the clutches of a daring footpad." She said "the thug . . . followed after her after she left a street car at Oxford and Vine streets . . . The strange man tried to grab (her) purse . . . She screamed and the fellow ran . . . Another scream brought LOVELAND to the spot. He escorted her home."--21 DEC 1906, p. 4.

A display advertisement: "San Mateo. (The Floral City). The Place to Live. Santa Ynez Park. Latest Lots at Lowest Prices on Easiest Terms." An "unequaled" investment opportunity. "One of the best suburban home sites. . ." Warren G. LOVELAND, Agent, Office Opposite Depot, 248 Main Street, San Mateo." There was a "$15 to $100 Free Coupon" attached to apply to any land purchase.--20 FEB 1908, p. 3.

"Harvey Arthur LOVELAND was granted a divorce from Zena Daphnea LOVELAND by Judge MOGAN on the ground of desertion."--3 JUL 1909, p. 20.

"Mr. A. J. LOVELAND was plesantly surprised last Thursday evening at his home, 62 South Park, by friends who gathered to celebrate his fifty-fourth birthday. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. A. J. LOVELAND, and Mr. and Mrs. H. A. LOVELAND . . . (others named).--16 FEB 1902, p. 33.

Utah:
From The Salt Lake (City UT) Herald:

"Motorman Oliver T. LOVELAND was seriously injured about the spine" when two street cars collided. "LOVELAND was thrown with force against the doors, and was later taken to the Ogden general hiospital."--15 APR 1902, p. 2.

Brigham City--"Orson C. LOVELAND was appoionted guardian of the person and estate of Beatrice LOVELAND, et. al., minors."--17 JAN 1909, p. 11.

"Pearl LOVELAND . . . testified that her husband Oliver G. LOVELAND, gambled his money instead of using it for her and their children's support. She also added that he drank. She said they were married in Salt Lake in 1903. She was given the custody of the two minor children and $10 a month alimony."--25 APR 1908, p. 3.

In a "news" (?) item, headlined "Insomnia Cured," Mrs. H. A. FLETCHER, of 59 Blodget street, Manchester, NH, told of toils and troubles due to sleeplessness. "I had been under the doctor's care for six weeks when my sister, Mrs. LOVELAND of Everest, persuaded me to try Dr. William's Pink Pills for Pale People. . . . From that time I slept well every night . . ." The pills cost "50 cents per box, six boxes for $2.50 by the Dr. William Company, Schenectady, N. Y."--28 NOV 1906, p. 9.

From the Deseret Evening News (Great Salt Lake City UT):

Chauncey LOVELAND was elected secretary of the Class of 1905 at Brigham Young College in Logan. Also literary editor of the Crimson, the college journal.--8 OCT 1904, p. 26.

"Wedding Permits" "Logan, Cache Co. UT" "Chancy L. LOVELAND, 20, of Fish Haven, Ida., and Annie JENSEN, 19, of Fairview, Wyo.
"J. C. LOVELAND, Jr., 45, of Fish Haven, Ida., and Anna B. OLSON, 33, of St. Charles, Ida."--12 OCT 1906, p. 3.

Illinois:

Rockford IL: Alpheus J. LOVELAND, a cabinet maker employed by the Rockford Chair and Furniture Company, is under arrest, charged with creating the scare at Springfield regarding the alleged attempt on the life of President Roosevelt. LOVELAND admitted to writing the Springfield authorities. "It is evident from his actions he is mentally deranged and a commission will be asked to inquire into his sanity. LOVELAND is 45 years of age and has lived here for seven years."--The Sun (New York City), 27 APR 1905, p. 2.

CT:

F. P. LOVELAND made the best record in strength test with scientifics in a contest betwen academic and scientific freshmen at Yale University in New Haven CT. He had the best academic record of 100.79, "practically thirty points better" than the best record made among the scientific group of students.--The New York (City) Tribune, 17 DEC 1904, p. 5.

Indiana:

"Frankfort, Ind., Aug. 21--During a quarrel at midnight Harvey THOMAS of this city was killed by Harry LOVELAND. LOVELAND killed THOMAS by striking him with his fist, breaking his neck."--The Salt Lake (City UT) Herald, 22 AUG 1903, p. 1.

Idaho:

C. S. LOVELAND has been appointed national bank examiner of Idaho to take office June 1. He resigned as State bank examiner.--The Deseret Evening News (Great Salt Lake City UT), 4 MAY 1907, p. 3.

Kentucky:

"The case of T. O. LOVELAND against F. M. WARE on a bill for jewelry resulted in a verdict for the defendant. This was the third trial, the jury hanging twice."--The Internal Journal, Stanford KY, 8 MAR 1907, p. 3.
