DNA Evidence in Lovelace/Loveless Research

In the past 18 months, DNA analysis of men bearing the surname Lovelace or Loveless has allowed researchers to distinguish three main family groups in North America: the Maryland group, which may descend from Thomas Lovelace of MD, b. 1664; the Virginia group, which descends from Charles Lovelace of VA, b. 1696; and the New England or New York group, whose founder is not yet known (to me, at any rate), but whose representatives are known in NY, NJ and RI in the early 1700s.

DNA analysis has not only distinguished these three groups, but it has helped sort out the complicated relationships within the main lines. In the Maryland group, for example, the DNA evidence has altered our models of family relationships that had been developed solely on the basis of limited documentary evidence. In other cases, the DNA evidence has confirmed suspected relationships.

There remain many questions to be resolved. It is not yet clear how any of the North American lines is connected to any English Lovelace family. It is not even clear that all North American lines have been identified, as there are two or three singleton results that cannot be matched with a known main group.

Male individuals with the surname Lovelace, Loveless or some variant thereof who would be interested in participating in the Lovelace DNA project are invited to look at the following websites to get more information.

The members of the Lovelace-L list on RootsWeb have a continuing discussion of the DNA results as they become available. The list archives can be searched here:

Please don't sign up and pay for the analysis without asking a couple of questions first. There are some things that DNA analysis is very good for, and some things it will never tell you. There are several people on the Lovelace list who can help you understand the benefits and limits of this kind of genealogical research.
