Hi Stella,

If you are now 16 and come from a long line of men who dropped out of high school to get married at age 16, your great grandfather could have been born (16 + 16 + 16 + 16) 64 years ago, in 1942, when FDR was president. If you are now 80 and come from a long line of men who married a second time and had a child when they were 60, your GGF could have been born (80 + 60 + 60 + 60) 260 years ago, in 1746, when George II was the lawful monarch and his colonists were trying to change that. Neither is likely, but both are physically possible.

Most families average 30 - 35 years a generation, so your GGF was probably born 90 - 105 years before you were. While you shouldn't reveal the age of living people on the Internet, dates for dead ones help people help you.

I found a Rufus who may be your Rufus on the SSDI,

RUFUS LOVEJOY
b. 28 Sep 1904
d. Mar 1979
LR 25124 (Liberty, Putnam, WV)

If he is yours, your GGF William was probably 18 - 44 when Rufus was born, although he could have been 75 (WV men age well) or he could have been 16. Chances are he was 20 - 40, but I used 18 - 44 when I changed your heading.

tells me there are towns named Union in Barbour and Monroe counties as well as Putnam. It did not have towns of Mud River or Sise. It didn't have the Union in Putnam County, either, so it isn't infallible.

Wikipedia tells me the Mud River rises in Boone County and wanders through Lincoln and Cabell counties.

There are tons of William Lovejoys in the census images I subscribe to. I can't look at them all. If you have a county and a rough idea of anyone's birth year, I'll try again for you. Rufus b. 1904 +/- 5 didn't come up on the 1920 or 1930. Neither Ollie nor Pearlie came up on the 1920.

PS - just looked Rufus up on

The one I found isn't yours; he is the son of Samuel L. and Marcena King.
