My wife Sandra (nee Smith), who is the great-granddaughter of Clara Lougee, and I visited the cemetery in Exeter, Maine a few years ago and found gravestones for two Lougee men who died in the Civil War. I don't recall the names but remember that they were about 20-22 years of age. Unfortunately, the records at the old Exeter city hall burned some years ago -- but there is a gentleman named Lougee who still lived there (on Lougee Road). We did not meet him, as he was reported to be reclusive, and so we did not bother him.
We are planning to stay in Loudon, NH in October and visit Gilmanton and also Lougee Pond nearby. We have an old family picture of the mill that was owned by John Lougee, father of John A. Lougee, and hope to see if it (or remnants) may still be there.
