A biography/family history of John Loucks, Froid, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 952 & 953. John was born, 4 Apr 1869, son of William and Mary (Shults) Loucks, both born in the Mohawk Valley near Albany, NY. William was a farmer; died in 1904, age 78. Mary Shults was the daughter of Josiah and Katie (Nellis) Shults, whose ancestors were from Holland. John worked on is father's farm until well past his majority, then moved to Elkton, SD, where he worked for six years in a flour mill. He returned home with his savings and he and his brother conducted a small clothing and men's furnishings store in Avoca. In 1906, he located to Bowbells, ND, where for 4-1/2 years he made good as a general merchant. In 1911, he found a promising new location at Froid, MT, where he established one of the leading mercantile business in the area. In Feb 1899, Steuben County, NY, John married Miss May Wagner, born in Avoca, NY, daughter of Lewis C. and Eliza (Shults) Wagner. Loucks children: Laura, Kathleen, Ruth (died at age 5), John T., Jr., b. 19 May 1918. I am not related. Notify Administrator about this message?
