Hi again Francois
Thank you for your prompt reply.
I'm not aware of any related Lotters in the Eastern Cape - but then I haven't even began to investigate. I had an Uncle Stanley who was a Salvation Army preacher in Newton Park, Port Elizabeth, but he was later transferred back to Jo'burg and passed away suddenly after a "minor' bladder op in 1987.
All the Lotters I know are descended from Cecil Harold (my grandfather) who was a steelworker until he died prematurely in 1962 from a lung cancer caused by his occupation.
His children spread out from Benoni and are now all over, Natal, Cape Town, the UK, Germany - even a cousin in Japan.
I am most curious about two aspects of our name. Firstly, why are we equally English and Afrikaans speaking? I have met Lotters that primarily use either the one. Our branch is basically English -speaking, though our paternal grandmother was a Bredenkamp and grew up in an Afrikaans household. Even so, all her kids were given English Christian names.
Secondly, some Lotters have the "umlat" (Lötter)and some don't - such as our branch.
I wonder why? Are there any info sources that I can pursue?
Best regards - Clive Lotter
