I am researching the Willis family of Morris County, NJ. This involves quite a lot of looking down all alleys. My ancestor Joseph Willis fought in the Revolutionary War, his wife applied for and was granted a pension, and she stated that he and his brother William were from Berkshire County, MA.
In searching ancestry.com, I've noticed that the Willis migration seems to be from parts of MA (Plymouth & Salem) to Long Island to Connecticut to New York and Western MA. Some of them went to Maine and New Hampshire after the American Revolution.
Researchers have linked the Willises of Northern New Jersey to Tolland, CT and New Haven, CT. I don't trust this completely because I can't find the records that they're reporting from.
I don't find many records because I'm looking for people in the 1600s and before 1775-1790, or when there weren't census records. What part of Connecticut are you researching, and what do you know of the Willis families there?
