Boy, I sure hope some of the same people are monitoring this board; I'm a very late comer, but think I might have some information of interest.
My wife is a descendant of Thomas Maxwell who was killed by Indians in 1782 while trying to rescue the Ingles family.Thomas moved to what is now Tazewell Co., VA, and more specifically to the headwaters of the north fork of the Clinch River, with his brother James ca. 1772-1774 from Botetourt Co.About (best estimate) 1778 he married a Rebecca (??) and they had at least two daughters. After Thomas's death, Rebecca (???) married John Hays, and the new family moved to Wilson Co., TN, by 1793.
Rebecca's first son was named Harman A. Hays, and her only surviving daughter from the Maxwell marriage had a son she named Harmon Atkins Drew. This, and the close interactions that the Maxwell family had with the Harman family in SW VA suggests to me that Rebecca was likely a Harman/Harmon.But who was her father if that were true.
As I keep studying the records, I see a closer relationship betweeen Thomas Maxwell and Jacob and Israel Harman than with the other Harmans. One will find Israel Harman's name closely linked with that of Thomas Maxwell in many of the old records of SW VA involving patrols during the Indian troubles and panics. So I began looking more closely at Israel Harman and his family.
When I found Richard Davis' posting of the family of Jacob Harmon, another light bulb went off!Rebecca (Harman?) Maxwell-Hays second son was named THOMAS THOMPSON Hays!I'd be willing to wager that Rebecca was the "missing" child born "ca. 1764" in Mr. Davis's listing (I'd refine the estimate of birth date to 1762, though).
I'm an experienced researcher living within easy access to one of the best genealogical libraries in the country, and I'll be pursuing these clues in the near future. In the meantime, if anyone here is willing to "prime the pump" to get me off to a faster start, I'd seriously appreciate it.Obviously I cannot contribute anything on the Harman family, yet, but I do know my Maxwells and would be glad to share that information with anyone who is interested.
