The information I have is from a book called THE HISTORY OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI, which states that Don Louis Lorimier was born in the parish of Etienne of Montreal, Canada in the year 1748. He was the son of a William Lorimier from Paris, France.
In 1769 Louis and his father immigrated to what is now Shelby county, Ohio and established a trading post there called Pickawillany, also known as "Loramie's Station". Louis Lorimier was friendly to the Indians in the vicinity and even married a half-breed Shawnee named Charlotte Bougainville. He was an agent and interpreter for the British and his post became a meeting place for them during the Revolutionary War. Raids by the Shawnee and Delaware Indians under Lorimier caused George Rogers Clark to attempt their extermination and in 1782 he destroyed the post. Lorimier barely escaped alive as the post was burned down. He fled to Wapakoneta, Ohio first and later settled in Missouri.
He lived first in St. Mary, Missouri; then St Genevieve, and later in Cape Girardeau. He is considered to be the first settler of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, being appointed captain of the militia and Spanish Commandant there.
His children were : Louis Jr who married Margaret Penny, Marie Louise who married Thomas S. Rodney, Augustus-unmarried, Agatha who married Daniel Steinback, Verneuil, Victor who married Sally Sheppard and William who married Hetty Thorn.
Louis Lorimier's first wife, Charlotte, died in 1808 and he married Marie Berthiaume in 1810. Louis Lorimiere died June 26, 1812 and is buriied in the Lorimier cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
I am a descendent of Marie Louise Lorimier and Thomas Rodney thru their daughter Polly who married Reuben Dowty.
