JAMES HILL EVANS was born in Cheddar, England, January 3, l845, and departed this life March 2lst, l925, at the age of 80 years, 2 months and l8 days.He came to America at the age of 3 years, settled with his parents in Dyersville, Dubuque County, Iowa.He enlisted in Company "B" 4th Iowa Cavalry, September 28th, l863, and was honorably discharged, August 8th, l865.
He was married in Dubuque, Iowa, December l2th, l866, to JANE TICKNELL, who died May 3lst, l903.To this union were born ll children, of which three survive; two daughters, MRS. J.W. ZORNES and MRS. P.W. HERRICK, both of Grimes, Iowa, and one son, JOHN H. EVANS, of Los Angeles, California, and who accompanied the body to this city.
He was married March 2, l905, to MRS. HANNAH LOREY, who survives him at their late home in Los Angeles and who was unable to return with the body on account of ill health.They sold their home here in March, l920, and moved to Los Angeles in April, where they have since resided, having made one visit back two and one-half years ago.
He was a very devout Christian and was a member and officer in the Methodist Church in this city for years and all who knew him respected him very highly.After moving to Los Angeles he placed his membership in the South Main Street Methodist Church, where he was a very regular attendant in spite of his age and impaired hearing.
He was a devoted husband, kind and loving father and friend to all and will be greatly missed by his many friends, both in Los Angeles and this city.His life ebbed away with the beautiful sunset of the Golden State, which he loved so much, to the land where suffering and tears are unknown.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church in Leon, Sunday afternoon, March 28th, conducted by Rev. J.E. Habliston.The G.A.R. members and the American Legion attended in a body, the American Legion having charge of the services at the grave.Interment was in the Leon Cemetery.
