Renee, yes my Grandmother Mary Jane( Lopp) Byrd was Indian ( Cherokee ) My Grandmother ( on my Mothers side) was Cherokee Indian also Her name was Mary Elizabeth (Stephens) Kaylor. They were not on the Roll, in fact they thought the government would take something else from them & wanted no part in it. Because they weren't on the roll, my parents couldn't get on.

I know nothing really about my Grandfather Byrd, since he left my G.M.and the family when my Dad was only 2 years old but I was told my Dad was born in Ark.( Mulberry) & then his Dad moved the family to Okla in 1890 then ( Indian Territory) & left them. I have tried to find out more about the Byrd's to no avail. My Husband had a stroke in Jan. of 2001 & that stopped my research because I have been taking care of him. He passed away in March this year & I have just now begin searching again. We were told that my Grandfather John Beverly Byrd, moved to Texas after he left here, remarried & had another family. about 2 years ago my Brother got a letter from someone who was researching for Tracy Byrd ( country & western singer ) He said when he got back to the late 1800 hundreds, they found Tracy" GGGrandfather was thought to have another family in Indian Territory & somehow they got my Brothers phone #, Ross Columbus Byrd Jr. ( thinking it was our Dad ) My Brother is 80 years old & his Daughter wrote them back but hasn't heard from them & my Brother misplaced the letter, so another dead end. that is always the case when you try to find a Byrd !!!!!! I was born very late in my Parents life so I remember less about my Grandparents, who were all dead before I was born,( My Gmothers were at least, I am not sure about my Gfathers ) I remember them talking about a ( I thouht they said Plenty Byrd & thought it was a man ) but I was so little & was not at all interested, they may have said Plyny--------- when I seen that name in your letter it rang a bell.
I am beginning to get back to my research & if I find any thing I will write you , will you please do the same ?
Thanks, Ann Byrd Avery
