I would like to provide an update on the Loomis Family DNA Project. We established the DNA Project two years ago with FamilyTreeDNA . A small number of Loomis descendants have participated, which is lower than we anticipated when we started.
Our goal was to obtain several tests from descendants of each of the sons of Joseph Loomis. This has yet to happen.
But there are a couple of interesting notes that have arisen. There has been a long held belief by the descendants of Joseph Loomis who have involved themselves in genealogical research, that the varying surnames, which looked or sounded similar to “Loomis” might all be related to a distant ancestor.
Two of those surnames recently participated in the Loomis DNA project and here is what was discovered. Keep in mind, this is based on only one test each for these two surnames and may or may not be enough to come to any practical conclusion.
We received a test from a Lomas individual who lives in England and we discovered that for a Most Recent Common Ancestor, we would have to go back in time to somewhere around 500 AD. Since this is based on many assumptions regarding DNA mutations, etc., this figure may have a greater variance and the time factor may be greater.
A second test results were given us from a Lomax descendant here in the United States. This test also showed a similar chance for a MRCA.
Of the Loomis tests that have so far come in, all showed a very close relationship and a MRCA within less than twenty generations or about 300 years.
What can we surmise from this? That the DNA testing is reliable for determining males who are descendant from Joseph Loomis. That two of the similar sounding surnames, Lomas and Lomax, are not related for all intents and purposes. Since finding any kind of written records earlier than the 1200’s is unlikely and time spent trying to tie these two surnames from these two family lines to ours would be futile.
That should not discourage anyone from those surname groups to also do DNA testing, as there is still a likelihood, that some lost Loomis family may have changed the spelling of their surname sometime over the last 300 years and are in fact descended from Joseph Loomis.
If you have considered participating in the Loomis DNA Project, we would like to encourage you to do so. We are requesting that the 37 marker test be selected as this gives us a much greater amount of genealogical information.
