Phillip - I concur with your assessment regarding the supposed "Simon" Longmire. There is no solid evidence for his existence, much less circumstantial. Where are the deeds? Where is a will? Where, other than in the previously referred to instance, is the name Simon mentioned elsewhere?
One thing to add which has me a bit puzzled: James mentions in a questionaire regarding Washington state history that his parents were French and German. Obviously, this precludes England as a point of origin regarding what he knew about his family. I think this is an important issue which shows some early ambivalence, or rather lack of knowledge, on his part.
One other point: Of the George who was the youngest son of Charles, what then to make of his progeny and what has been clearly documented? For if we substitute Simon for Charlesthen we have many unaccounted for Longmires which have been accounted for.
It's quite possible in this case that our family name was misconstrued with that of the Longmores. In more than one instance, for example as pertains to the Mayflower, the name Longmire has been transposed from Longmore. This may be an avenue of redress in terms of ruling things out if one wished to take it further.
Keep up the good work. It will all pan out someday, but only with diligence.
