George, Charles, and William
In trying to assign a birth order for the children of William Longmire and wife Susanna one is tempted to go with the prevailing practice of the day. In William's case, and probably because he was somewhat fresh from England, it appears likely that he followed suit. Thus we may deduce a probable order of births for his sons based on the following naming pattern: oldest named for paternal grandfather, next for maternal grandfather, next for father.
Given that we know William's father was George we can place his son George 1st. Since he named a son William we can place him 3rd. This, theoretically, leaves Charles as being the 2nd son. This also leads to speculation as to the name of Susanna's father. However, this naming pattern is not fool-proof and is only brought up to help clarify the possibilities.
One thing that may also be of help in determining birth order is looking back to marriage dates and other recorded info. For example, we can place a birthdate for George as before 1738 by virtue of his award for damages in a suit from 1759 in King George Co, Va. In those days you must have been 21 to enter a suit in your own name. If you were to factor in the cause of the suit and a timeline for action on it, a comfortable margin is achieved for dating purposes to at least before 1738. Also of note, as pertains to George and William, is the difference in years between their respective marriage dates.
Besides the 3 sons aforementioned, the possibility of a daughter of William and Susanna can not be discounted. To that effect I tentatively give Elizabeth Longmire's birth as 1740's due to her husband, John Cabaniss, as having a generally accepted birth date of ca 1742.
Would like to hear other opinions, corrections, or observations on this, and on naming patterns in general regarding William's sons - which might also be of help in determining the parents of Susanna. I am particularly interested in the name John and how it may or may not relate to John Garrett IV, George Longmire's father-in-law.
