On Dec. 12, 2008, the publisher bid on eBay a 19th-century pocket watch with the faceplate inscription"Frank M. Langnecker, New Brighton, PA" (see Fig. X). On Dec. 23, 2008, the publisher bid on eBay six knifes and six forks with the holding cloth "F. M. Langnecker - Jeweller, New Brighton, PA" sewn on the upper left side (see Fig. X).
Frank (Sep. 14, 1848-Jan. 2, 1917) was buried Jan. 5, 1917 in Grove Cemetery, New Brighton, Beaver Co, PA and was married to Mary J. Ferguson (Jun. 1847-1910).In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Frank was, befittingly, a jeweller. In the 1850-1870 censuses, the Frank's father Charles (e.g., Franz Carl) and his family had the surname "Longnecker."
Charles (about 1818-after 1880/before 1900) and his wife Mary Anna Miller (Feb. 2, 1816-Feb. 1869) were born in the Palatinate, Baden, Germany. Charles was married on Dec. 4,1842 in St. John's United Evangelical (Burry's) Church, New Sewickley Township, Beaver Co., PAIn the 1850 census, he worked as a butcher, and latter farmed. In the 1870 census, Charles (Mary Anna died earlier that year) lived with his four children in New Brighton. In the 1880 census, "Charley" was divorced (was Charles remarried in the 1870s?) and resided in North Sewickley, Beaver Co., PA.Could it be that Charles' (and Frank's) ancestors were part of the Swiss-born Langeneggers? The Langeneggers left Langnau, Canton Bern, Switzerland during their Anabaptist persecution in the early 1600's and moved to the Palatinate. Some of the Langeneggers stayed in the Palatinate, and some of them came over via Brussels, Belgium, to the Pennsylvania colonybefore 1718. The surname Langenegger was Anglicized into, predominantly, the surname Longenecker in the Pennsylvania colony.Over time, the surname was shorten to Longnecker, Longacre, Longaker, etc. In Germany, particularly, the surname could have been Germanized into Langenecker, Langnecker, Langacker, etc. - so it may be Frank's ancestors.
Does any reader know Charles' past genealogy?
