Hello Johnny,
I have nothing to add to your post.I have been having trouble locating my Great-grandfathers family because I have little to go on.My great Grandfather was John William Long. His birth date is Sept. 19, 1871 and he died in 1939.His death certificate says he was born in NC, his military records indicate he was born in Embreeville, Washington Co., TN and census reports indicate that he was born in NC.His death certificate indicates his father was "Sam" Long. His mother, "Unknown".He was married to Essa Walker and has a child with her in 1892, Sarah Katherine Long.He served in the Spanish American War and married my Great Grandmother Mary C. Blankenship in Erwin TN in 1903.They had the following children:Dana Franklin, William Martin, Callie(list in one census as Mary C), Myrtle Alvia, Roy Gilbert, Grover(died in childhood), Helen (died in childhood) and Georgia Earlene.William Martin was born in Black Mountain,NC, all the other children were born in Unicoi Co. John William Long worked for the Clinchfield Railroad.Dana Franklin Long moved to Newell WV in the 1930's then to the New Philadelphia area of OH.William Martin also went to Newell, WV looking for work during the depression, however unlike his brother before him, he returned to Erwin, TN and worked for the Southern Pottery.Myrtle also worked for the Southern Pottery.Roy Gilbert was killed in a plane crash in Nov. 1959 while serving in the Navy.It is said that the plane he was on was smuggling whiskey either to or from Cuba. ( I haven't found any mention in old newspapers)I am told he was married and had 2 children a boy and a girl who were living in Florida at the time.Grover and Helen died in 1917 during the flu epidemic.
I have spoken to my oldest known living relatives, who cannot give me much more info than I have given here.I was not raised by my biological family and just in 1998 became interested in family research when I found out I could.I hope that you have information for me, if not I am sure I have enlightened you.
