Obituary for William Ellison Long, Jr., of Anderson, South Carolina
ELLISON LONG, JR.
ANDERSON, SC - William Ellison Long, Jr., husband of Mary S. "Mimi" Long, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, among family in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 81.
He was a graduate of Greenville High School, attended Furman University, served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and graduated from the University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina School of Law.
A long and accomplished legal career was his passion and pride, but he never let this solely define him, as he was active and accomplished in many areas. He was a reliable fundraiser for charitable and political causes. He volunteered over decades for the Anderson Sertoma Club, serving as its President and ultimately, the District Governor. He acted on stage with JoAnne Woodward, and later held many leading roles in Anderson Little Theatre. He was a prolific student of history and literature, was a
voracious reader, and could recite hundreds of poems and quotations from memory. His many hobbies provided much satisfaction, each mastered with grace and determination. Later in life, he took up woodworking where his carvings won numerous awards in the state and throughout the Southeast.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five children: Sharon Marinelli of Aiken, South Carolina, Mary Catherine Freck of Vienna, Virginia, Bill Long, Lisa Whitlark and Mark Long of Atlanta, Georgia. His dozen grandchildren were a source of great pride and love.
The Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, August 29, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. L. Thomas Richie. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm.
A private entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to S.C. Alzheimer's Association , 4124 Clemson Boulevard, Suite L, Anderson, SC 29621, or to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
