Anna (Wall?) Long was born ca. 1791 in North Carolina. It is not known where she married Hugh Long but hteir children were born in Giles County, Tennessee. The family moved to Sumter County Alabama in the early 1830's and by 1840 they, along with other related families went on to the Republic of Texas. Her husband's brother, Col. John Long, and his family went directly to Crockett in Houston County but Hugh and Anna stopped near Caddo Lake in what they thought was Louisiana. The story is told that when the land was surveyed they learned they were in the Republic of Texas in Harrison County and that is wheres Hugh's Land Grant was located.
In December 1840 Hugh died and the plantation and slaves were sold except for two.By 1850 when the estate was settled, Anna and her sons had moved on to Augusta, Houston County, Texas.During the Civil War, Anna lived with two of her son's wives and their children while the men were away. Her youngest son, Simon served with Hood's Texas Brigade and died in Petersburg, Virginia. Her son, Hugh, died on the way home from the war.John came back to Augusta and raised Hugh's children along with his own and Anna stayed on to help.
Hugh and Ann Long had six xhildren:Charles (1824-1859); Richard (D. 1843); John (ca. 1828-1898); Hugh (ca. 1830 - 1863); Simon Elliott (ca. 1832 - 1863); and Sarah E. (D. bef 1849) - Mrs. Charles W. Butler.
