Wow! Thank you. I'm in the process of getting John J's Civil War records. In the interim, this is the information I have so far. I also have pictures of his daughter, Elizabeth Jane (my great-grandmother)...his son, John, is buried next to Elizabeth Jane in Onaway, MI and I've visited their graves many times as they are buried just a few yards from my father. Headstone at Mt. Joy Cemetery in Alcona, Michigan: J.J. LANDON Co. C 22D Mich. Inf. (Grand Army of the Republic '61-'65 flagholder adjacent to the following stone) Notes: John J London was a Civil War veteran. His other tombstone is broken and unreadable. The spelling on the tombstone is incorrect. He was first married to an unidentified woman. Their children included Mary (1855, St Clair, Michigan) and John (1857, Michigan). He then married Sarah Keyes (June 1, 1837, Canada), (who married Peter McGregor after John died). Their children included August (1865), Justice (1867, Michigan), and Elizabeth (1870, Michigan). In 1860 he was living in the town of Kimball, Kimball Township, St. Clair County, Michigan, with his wife, Sarah (1837, Canada), and their children, Mary (1855, Michigan), John H. (1858, Michigan), and Lucinda (1859, Michigan). He was a carpenter. His real estate was worth $400, and a $50 personal estate. He was living next door to Aaron (1784, New York) and Nancy London (1785, New York), who were probably his parents. According to military records, John J London, age 39, from Kimball Township, St Clair County, Michigan, enlisted in Company C, 22nd Michigan Infantry Regiment, on August 11, 1862, and was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on June 26, 1865. He died October 18, 1869. According to the 10/3/1912 Alcona County Review: "GRAVES OF VETERAN SOLDIERS IN ALCONA COUNTY CEMETERIES" I am just in receipt of a communication for the War Department at Washington, DC, saying: "Date of death is not permitted on headstones." I have taken considerable pains to obtain the following information, both as to service record and date of death, and I thought best to publish the whole matter, so that the general public could have the benefit of my research, and a record, if they cared to keep it. Below is the name of the cemetery they are in, the number of the lot (where the lots in the cemetery are numbered) they are buried on, name, rank, service record and date of death. GEORGE COLWELL, HAYNES TOWNSHIP CEMETERY William Clearwater -- Private Co. A, 5th N.Y. Heavy Artillery. Died April 10th, 1903 John London -- Private Co. C, 22nd Mich. Vol Inft. Died Oct 18th, 1869 Notify Administrator about this message?
