Chris,
I lived in Scotland for three years and never ran across any McLomaxes. The name almost certainly originated in the Lancashire region of England. There are records of Lomaxes in the area going back many centuries. It is still a common name in the region, and not uncommon throughout Great Britain. Here's a web site that gives alot of background, including early and alternative spellings of the name: http://www.xamol.net/6.html.
