Edward: I was hoping you could tell me that there really is a connection between the two names. vonLoehr, literally translated, means "of Loehr" and since German spelling and English spelling are not always the same, I hoped we might find a connection. You can see from the website the origins of this family in Germany. There are at least two towns called Lohr in Germany today, according to a current map I have. Your reference to "wild gold" is interesting. As I stated, John George vonLoehr came to America in 1697. On a patent for 5000 acres of land he purchased from the Penn lands in NJ, he is listed as a gold merchant from London. I believe his wife was Welsh (Mary Philips) and that vonLoehr may have lived in England for some years before they embarked for America. Members of her family were already settled here when John and Mary came to Philadelphia. Do you have any connections to the Lohr family in or around Philadelphia in the early 1700s?
