If I can figure out how to do it, I think it would be easier to track our ancestors in Germany than here, simply because they seeemed to "stay put", whereas the ones in the USA seem to move around more. I've only been into genealogy about two years, but only more seriously this last year. Like you, I "caught the genealogy bug" after a quick success with one part of my family. I also don't suscribe to any of the sites that cost, and mainly depend on message boards and the generosity of others. Of course, if I can help anyone else with my info., I'm happy to do it.
I do have the "Generations" family tree software program and really like it. I had to get something just to organize all my information. My files are taking over the place! I'm just starting to put my family data into the program, which is so time-consuming.
I've been trying to find Lohmann and Reinke history for my husband since he only has two brothers and one cousin (whom he actually knows) left in this country. He knows so little about his family in Germany. I'm sure he has cousins he is unaware of both in this country and in Germany. I'm hoping to find someone who had ancestors who knew his mom and dad and their families. Several years back, we got something in the mail about a Lohmann book someone was attempting to sell. We declined to purchase it at the time, since we weren't "into" genealogy back then and had other priorities we needed to concentrate on at that time. Now, I'm curious if any of our Lohmanns were actually in that book!
I have bought one family book for a large branch of my family, the Chandlers. It was about $45 and I've been so happy with it. It included most of my Chandler family and had so much information on our entire section of the Chandlers.
If I ran across a Lohmann book like that, and it was reasonably priced, and included much of our family, I'd probably want to buy it. Until then, I'm just relying on the goodness of others who may have a tidbit of information on our Lohmann family. If I happen across some of your family members' names while looking for mine, I'll be glad to pass it on to you. Tell me again the given names you are researching. I remember Ludwig and of course, the Henry name we have in common. What are the other names you're concentrating on presently?
