James Taylor LOGAN was adopted by the ROGERS family, but knew about his adoption and maintained contact with his birth mother's relatives. Here is a letter he wrote to his uncle Jeremiah Vardeman COCKRELL, his mother's younger brother. I posted this today in the COCKRELL family forum, but because the descendant is interested in learning the names of James Taylor ROGERS brothers - who remained with their father and all have the LOGAN surname, I'm posting this letter here, to, with a link to the original thread. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA NO 156 NORTH SPRING ST. APRIL 30TH 1903. Hon. Jeremiah V. Cockrell Abilene Texas -- My Dear Uncle. While in New Orleans La. last December my spare time - while waiting for business development - was spent in the Public Library and accidentally several histories, that treat of early Kentucky affairs fell under my eyes and excited my admiration for its early settlers. Among them is Gen. Ben Logan, born in Augusta Va. who went into Ky. with Daniel Bone and who settled first in Licolm Co. building Logan's Fort and who finally moved to Shelby Co. and died there about 1802. He was very prominent, there served in all her wars, was in her Legislatures and for him was Logan County named. Col. John Logan was with him and was his brother and was State Treasurer for 18 years. William Logan was a son of Gen. Ben Logan and was a U.S. Senator in 1820 and resigned to run for Govenor. He was likewise a member of the Supreme Court. There was also a Hugh Logan in the Soldiers of Gen. Ben. Logan about 1780. Being almost entirely ignorant of my ancestry, my desire is to trace it up on both sides -- Cockrell and Logan. Hence, knowing your information is extensive I now ask that you will give me what facts you possess about these. Let me suggest that you take each side separately and commencing with my parents trace the line back giving names birth marriage and death. My mind is satisfied that my father belonged to the Kentucky Logans. He told me that he was born there but the facts have all slipped from me. If a start can be gotten it is quite probable the line can be traced. There are great grand sons of Gen. Ben Logan alive to-day. Among these are David Rodman-Murray -- now Adjutant General at Frankfort and Logan C. Murray Pres. of the American National Bank at Louisville and a half brother Ex Gov. Thomas Crittenden of Mo. Emmet Garvin Logan Editor Evening Times at Louisville and Rev. James Emmet Garvin Logan of Richmond Ky are members of the family. If you can give me some clues than I will communicate with some of these and they can probably straighten out all doubts. Yours in love. James Taylor Rogers Son of Preston F. Rogers and Nancy Cockrell [NOTE: Nancy Cockrell is the elder sister of Jeremiah Vardeman Cockrell, known as "Uncle Vard" to JT Rogers, author of the above letter. Nancy Cockrell LOGAN and J.Vard COCKRELL were the children of Joseph and Nancy Ellis COCKRELL, of Johnson Co., Missouri.] http://genforum.genealogy.com/cockrell/messages/915.html Notify Administrator about this message?
