Scotch Irish Logan Lineage

The records of the Logan family and its ancestors are, perhaps, the most confusing, both on the web and in genealogical publication in local libraries, Of the many it has been my misfortune to research this one has been the most difficult. So, I am seeking some assistance from those who may have found reasonably accurate and reliable histories of the Logan Family which immigrated to Virginia about 1740. My specific interest is in the ancestry of David Logan of Orange/Augusta County, VA. He was the father of several very prominent Revolutionary Logan of VA and KY. His descendants are very well and reliably documented so it is his ancestry that is my concern.
Depending on who and what publication or Fmily Tree one reviews he was born 1701, 1703, 1706, or 1715. He may have been born Ayr, Syrshire, Scotland or Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland. His parents may have been James Logan of Pennsylvania, or George Logan of Ireland, or John Logan of Scotland (two of these), or John James Logan (son of the preceding George Logan), or Patrick Logan of Ireland.
My feeling is that many of the David's cited above may truly be correct but the assignment of most to David, John and William Logan, Immigrants to VA is where the error is occuring.
If anyone has reliable data and is willing to share and cite their sources I would be most grateful for the assistance and guidance.
