Dear Dennis,
It is good to hear from a Moreland researcher.
I've done extensive research on the Gilmer County origins of former D.O.T. Commissioner, Tom Moreland (and my 3rd cousin by marriage of his great-grandfather Jasper Moreland to Lavica (Vicie) Anderson, d/o Jacob (Jake) Thomas Anderson, who was s/o Josiah Anderson and Mary (mnu) of Haywood County, NC [formerly part of Buncombe Co., where I SUSPECT but cannot prove Josiah's brothers - not sure of their names - relocated from S. C. - prob. Newberry Co]).
That research led me to Gilmer County, where I found two - maybe three- distinct Moreland families, so far as I could determine.Tom Moreland's ancestor in Buncombe Co, who relocated to Gilmer county by early 1840s, was an older John Moreland with adult children. He had all sons, some of whom were James S., Allison/Alson [Deeds and Moreland bible records furnish the names of John's children].Tom Moreland's father was J. L. Moreland m. Evelyn Terry; his grandfather was Tom Moreland who m. Eva Charles, Murray Co.
A young unidentified John Moreland, whose birthplace is unknown, census 1840 and d. Gilmer County 1840 (estate records). His widow was Rebecca Hall, d/o Thomas Hall of Gilmer Co.John and Rebecca Hall Moreland had two young daughters in 1840, Rosana Pirenas and Mary Jane (hope memory is accurate for Mary Jane's given names).Rebecca Hall Moreland's birthstate was indicated on one census as S. C.She remained in Gilmer Co, so far as I know.
My line is more elusive.A William Moreland was on the 1840 census of Murray County, with an older male (perhaps Joseph Moreland) living in his household.I've no further info re William Moreland after 1840 (have not researched deeds of Murray Co).A Joseph Moreland appeared in the deeds of Gilmer County during mid-to-late 1840s.My gr-gr-grandmother Mary Ann Moreland (m. Robert Logan 1847 Gilmer Co - removed to Murray Co by 1852 or so [Murray deeds and MURRAY CO HERITAGE]).Joseph Moreland was found living near Mary Ann Moreland Logan and her spouse Robert.Mary Ann's Confederate pension application indicated she was bc 1823-4 and had lived in Ga. since 1840s.
I have traced Joseph Moreland to York County SC by census; he is the s/o of a John Moreland there, who disappeared from the census 1840 but was found making an annual return for his son John Pickens Moreland about 1843[child of his second marriage to widow of Amos Gladden].Sons James andJoseph show up on the census of York Co.[John Pickens Moreland was bc 1820-21, -- the same year or one year following the death of Amos Gladdan;everyone remarried quickly.Elizabeth Gladden had a total of 12 children -- and John had several minor young children; they needed each other.Elizabeth d. not long ffg. her remarriage to John Moreland.
[Can't at the moment recall Elizabeth's maiden name -- an unusual one --.] These families lived in a cluster in 1790-1800s in York Dist SC [the county is now as I recall Cherokee].
That line is traceable to York Co VA, through the will of a John Moreland, whose son William was the father of John of York Co SC.William's land in York Co VA was inherited and sold by John of York SC (deeds and estate records).
As often happens in a small communities at an early date, there were many intermarriages which make the records unclear.{Such as the intermarriage of Jasper Moreland of the Buncombe Co line and Lavica Anderson. Also, Robert Logan and Mary Ann Moreland Logan had a daughter Jane, who married William Harrison in Gilmer Co GA.)
I have speculated Robert Logan came from York Co SC to Gilmer Co also. The Logan families I've done most research on are connected to the Sandlins and Blacks.
If you are interested in sharing your info, please post your email address and we can perhaps move forward.
If DNA can be traced through maternal lines using a direct descendant male, perhaps I should try that.Any tips?
Thanks, Joann
