Loftus, William & Sarah of NY. & MI.
William Loftus and Sarah O'Conner were born in Ireland. He born in 1820 & she was born in 1823. Her dad's name was Peter. The 1870 census lists Elizabeth as 16 & John as 14 both born in New York. It also lists Mary as 12, James as 10, Maggie as 8, Michael as 6, Peter as 3, and Catherine as 1. All these childern were born in Michigan. The 1861 Plat Map. showes them in North Plains Twp. Ionia Co. Three of their childern died in 1882; Micheal, Catherine, & Jane (she was born on 10-04-1873). William died in 1897 & she died in 1898.
Elizabeth married James Herald on April 28th, 1873 in Hubbardston, MI. James was born in N.Y. He was a Civil War veteran. There was a Peter Loftus in his Outfit also. His parents were Edward Herald & Mary Ann Cook. In the 1870 census he is living in Muir, MI. with his brother, Edward & wife. Elizabeth died on 12-22-1884 of pneumonia.
John married Anna Kelly, Daughter of Hugh Kelly & Bridget Fahey, both born in Ireland. He died in 1901. & she died in 1929.
Mary married Dennis Hogan, son of Michael Hogan & Marguert Hurly. She died in 1888 & he died in 1939. His parents were living in the Hubbardston area.
James married Loetta McMillian, daughter of William McMillian & Johana Magner. He died in 1930 and she died in 1946.
Maggie died in 1948 at our home. She was staying with us, because our mother was quite ill. She was the house keeper for Father McCabe both at St. John the Baptist in Hubbardston, and at St. Thersa's in Detrioit, MI.
Peter died in 1909. It would appear that he did not marry, in that he is buried in the same lots as his parents, bothers & sisters.
All of above mentioned Loftus are buried in the St. John the Baptist Cemetery. There are a number of decendants of Elizabeth living in the Hubbardston area and all over the United States. I know of at least one or more decendants of James living in the area.
