I would be interested to hear from the descendants of Alice Loftus.
The 1901 census gives the following information:
Head of family Alice Loftus, aged 52, born in Bolton.
Edith aged 30, Matthias K. aged 28, Harold S. aged 25 were alll born in Bolton.
Nicolas M. aged 24 (my grandfather), Alice aged 22, were born in Preston.
Percy R. aged 20, Arthur aged 18, Harry M. aged 17, Thomas aged aged 15 were born in Oldham.
Mary E.W. aged 13, Sarah J. aged 9 and Margaret E. aged 8 were born in Darwen.
Nicolas was married to Mary Jane Rigby of Darwen. According to the census Harold was also married but no details of his wife are given and she is not listed in the family house at 102 Greenway Street.
The census lists Alice as head of the family and SINGLE! Let us hope that this is an enumerator's error and thathe meant to put 'widowed'.
