These are some notes found in the
Leonardo Andrea collection of SC.
Thought some of you may find interesting.
THE LOFTIS FAMILY
The name of LOFTIS is derived from the English family
surname of LOFTHOUSE and in England it is still spelled as LOFTHOUSE. The Irish family of LOFTHOUSE spelled it as LOFTUS and later as LOFTIS. It is also spelled as LOFTICE and LOFESHOUSE and LOFTES. The American family of LOFTHOUSE is consistently spelled as LOFTIS.
The American family of LOFTIS is descended from Archbishop LOFTIS of Belfast, Ireland.
The first LOFTIS people to be found in America were in the New England states and from there they drifted into N.Y. and into Va. From Va. they came to Rockingham Co., N.C. which adjoins the state of Va. From Rockkingham Co the Loftis family came to SC and from S.C. went to Ga.
The first man by name of LOFTIS to come into S.C. was JOB LOFTIS who settled in Newberry Co., S.C. where he was living in 1790. JOB LOFTIS was the first LOFTIS to appear in the Greenville Co. records.
The LOFTIS family settled in S.C., along the three TYGER Rivers, and just across the state line above the Tyger Rivers in N.C.
In Palmer, Mass. the family of Loftis settled before the Revolution, with them was a family of LASSITER who came from Tipperary, Ireland.
[There are files from the S.C. Historical Commission in Columbia that list JAMES, MARTIN and JOHN LOFTIS plat of lands on the Tyger Rivers.]
ROBIN LOFTIS at age of 44 at his enlistment from Greenville Co.S.C. as a private in the 2nd S.C. Calvary Regt. in Co F, CSA. Says many of the names are missing or misspelled on the rolls...

HEADS OF FAMILIES by name of LOFTIS in 1790 in the U.S.
JOHN LOFTIS with wife was living in Kent Co., Maryland.
WILLIAM LOFTIS Sr. in Rockingham Co., N.C. with wife...
WILLIAM LOFTIS JR. in Rockinham....
MRS. SARAH LOFTIS residing in 1790 in Out Ward of N.Y. City
with 2 sons over the age of 16.
ARCHIBALD LOFTIS with 3 in family on Halifax. Co., Va.
SAMUEL LOFTIS and ASA LEFFUSS Cateret Co, N.C.
SOLOMON LOFTIS in Greenville Co., S.C. in 1790 with wife and one other man over age 16 in the house with him.
JOB LOFTIS in Newberry, S.C. in 1790 with a wife and four daughters.
MARTHA LOFTIS was the first LOFTIS name I found in any of the S.C. records. He says he found this in a Charleston newspaper; 'MISS MARTHA LOFTIS was married to MR. JOHN SHEPPARD Sept. 6, 1771 at her home on the headwaters of the Santee River'...

HOPE THIS TID-BIT HELPS AND DOESN'T CONFUSE THE MATTER MORE ! ;{ This is not my family.
nancie in S.C.
