Unfortunately No, I do not know of any such families with a related story such as yours but will certainly keep it in mind as I pass through the pages of genealogy.
Can't say that I envy you with the idea that your relative changed his name. It's hard enough to trace someone knowing their name let alone changing it, but will keep you posted if I should find anything.
