Kathy,
I forgot to add what happened to the real Rufus according to the Jessup genealogy. Here it is (p. 292):
Rufus Allen Lockwood, b. 15 Nov., 1804; grad. Yale College, 1831 and Newton Theological Institute, Mass., 20 Aug., 1834, and on the 25th Sept. ordained in Newburyport as a Baptist minister. Not having firm health he accepted a call to preach in New Orleans.Returning home the next spring by way of Sparta, Tenn., he preached there on the Sabbath, but was soon after taken with bleeding at the lungs and expired almost immediately, 25 May 1835.
Also on p. 306 "The change in his name was made to conceal his identity after his desertion, and was made, it is thought, with the advice and consent of his uncle Lockwood."
If you can access Jonathan's bio, it really is quite interesting. He was quite a lawyer in Tippecanoe.p. 307 "the most remarkable criminal trial that ever occurred in the State.Lockwood's speech lasted nine hours, - nine hours of most impassioned, fervid oratory, - and he won the case.Copies of this speech are still extant, and many remember the occasion."
So, back to the real Rufus Allen Lockwood. He was the son of Sarah Jessup of Greenwich and Daniel Lockwood son of Daniel of Stamford according to Jessup.
