I seem to be descended from a James (Horatio?) LOCKHART who was born in Scotland, probably in Ayr or Lanark, in late 1600's or early 1700's. Possibly came to PA, I would guess from Ulster after 1707 (Act of Union) since few came to the colonies directly from Scotland.I have not been able to find out why they did not come directly from Scotland after 1707?
James had a sone named James and another named Jacob (Horatio?), possibly the other brothers were Andrew?, Randal, and maybe a Levi.
Jacob had sons by most of the above names plus a son Levi or Levi Peter; they lived in the Scotch-Irish Colony, owned land, served on juries etc. in Staunton, VA.Levi's (Peter) and son Levi Peter or Levi P. moved to Kentucky and then to IN, probably Orange County. Levi Peter LOCKHART left his wife, Mary, and family in IN and came to TX in 1836. Joined TX Infantry in N. Orleans or Galveston in 1836, after San Jacinto. Died 1837 probably at Ft. Bowie, Washington County 1837 but might have returned to IN?
Levi P.'s sons Joseph Warren, Samuel, Charles, and probably a daugter came to TX c. 1854 and claimed land in Coryell County (originally Milam). Probably did not occupy land, at least for long. Joseph Warren, a smith, and Samuel, first Sheriff of Llano County, for whom LOCKHART MTN, NNE or Llano, is named. Both married sisters CHASTAIN, J.W., Mary.
PVT. Joseph Warren, a smith, joined Union Army, did not believe in slavery and "free thinker", at N. Orleans, 1863, and served until 1865 at Ft. Brown, TX, controlled by Union. His son, my g grandfather, William Wesley LOCKHART (primarily hunter) b. c 1854 d. 1942 or '43, moved to Weed (7000'+), NM Territory, in 1879, the year he married.Did he have a land grant in NM from his father's service in Union Army? Children married FOREHAND family. Grampa "Wes's" politics: Republican.Kept NM farm but returned to Sherwood, Irion County, TX, 1889 "for Edgar's education." William Edgar LOCKHART, Sr b. 1883 (professor, West Texas at Canyon, and CoF, 142nd Infantry, 36th Infantry Div, Commanding. d. Ft. Sill, 1942), m. 1904 Fannie Lee MCCUTCHEN,b.1886 d. 1969. Children: Fay LOCKHART MAYS b. 1905 d. 1980's in Austin; William Edgar LOCKHART, Jr. MD b. 1908 d. 1987, Alpine, TX (physician and Mayor of Alpine, TX, LOCKHART Ave. named for); Col. Vincent McCutcheon, (Ret. US Army) b.1912 ("O" added by his mother); Lynna Lee LOCKHART PETTITT b. after 1914, d.1970's.
